VOCATION BY GOD'S GRACE
God will show you and I the path to life and the fullness of His goodness.
In today's Responsorial Psalm we acclaim, "You are my inheritance, O Lord" (Ps 16:5). God will show you and I the path to life and the fullness of His goodness. Jesus' words are truth and He consecrated us in truth (cf Jn 17:17). Today, the Church honors St. John Chrysostom. As a bishop and Doctor of the Church, his followers gave him the surname, "The Golden Mouth." John's preaching, "By word and example, exemplifies the role of the prophet to comfort the disturbed and to disturb the comfortable. For honesty and courage he paid the price of a turbulent ministry as bishop, personal vilification and exile."
Hatred stemming from the royal court and other envious persons forced John Chrysostom into exile twice. After completing his difficult labors, he died at Comana in Pontus on September 14, 407. By following the great teacher, Christ Jesus, John accomplished much in his writings to explain Catholic doctrine. In the Gospel of Luke Jesus said to His disciples, "No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher" (Lk 6:40).
